While convergence of TV and new digital media is regarded a hot topic for the industry, the relationship between TV and the games industry is not always at the forefront of discussion. The Game World Playground provides a chance to meet leading Swiss and other European creators of games software and technologies. It offers inspiring hands on experiences and provides opportunities to discuss the possible «marriages» between computer games and TV programmes. The overall aim is to support the dialogue between the games industry and the world of television.
The Game World Playground is operated through the Game Design Department of the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) and supported by «Game Culture», a programme of Pro Helvetia – Swiss Arts Council and Apple Switzerland.

“Doctor Who” is the World longest running science fiction-adventure series and the BBC’s flagship drama production, anchor of BBC One’s Saturday night schedule, with the widest range of additional activities of any UK television brand – from website to consumer products. As well as 13 new TV dramaepisodes, BBC Cymru Wales produced 4 “interactive episodes” – special on line stories realised as computer games, downloadable to PC and Mac from the bbb.co.uk/doctorwho website.
The panel will reveal how multi-platform content entered the mainstream, looking at how the special content was made – with production integrated alongside the filming of the drama series and with leading software house Sumo Digital. At times TV producers and writers had to swap roles with counterparts in computer programming and realisation. The transformation from Television to Interactive episodes includes performance capture technology such as rotoscoping as well as collaborative working on script and design development. The session will also explore if there is a business case for new media exploitation and if TV producers can play a pivotal role in creating multiplatform content that goes beyond the promotional benefits of website syndication or sub-license characters. Experts on “Doctor Who” as well as game and multiplatform experts will talk about their experience and discuss chances and challenges of the convergence of TV and multiplatform.

The Berlin School believes that leadership is something that can happen at all levels of an organization, not just at the top. Since the early days of the television industry, one of the key elements of a successful schedule has been scripted family entertainment, those programmes that the family can sit down and enjoy together. Reinventing this kind of show, the Holy Grail of primetime, is a constant creative challenge, even more so now that everybody in the family is more likely to be sitting in front of a different screen… One of the more successful attempts in recent years is Outnumbered, the part-improvised BBC show which has already won several awards in the UK and is a nominee in the sitcom category at this year’s Rose d’Or. Producers and creators of “Outnumbered” will present the programme and discuss the creative process and its pitfalls and triumphs.
