Jan Böhmermann to receive Rose d’Or Entertainer of the Year Award

German satirist and TV host Jan Böhmermann will be named Entertainer of the Year at the 57th Rose d’Or Awards ceremony in Berlin on Thursday 13 September.

The award, given by organizers the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) for the second time, recognizes the contribution to the world of entertainment of one talented individual over the past 12 months. Last year’s recipient was British actor and talkshow host James Corden.

Jan Böhmermann, 37, is well-known in Germany for his weekly late night show Neo Magazin Royale on ZDF.

His satirical pieces have attracted national and international attention; including the music video ‘V for Varoufakis’ about the former Greek Minister of Finance Yanis Varoufakis (#Varoufake) and a poem about Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Jan also presents the weekly podcast show ‘Fest & Flauschig’ (Firm & Fluffy), together with Olli Schulz, which is one of the most streamed podcasts globally on Spotify.

“Jan is fully deserving of the 2nd Rose d’Or Entertainer of the Year Award,” said EBU Head of Television and Rose d’Or organizer Jeroen Depraetere.

“Not only has Jan made a huge impact in Germany but his biting satire has been an international hit too and this award recognizes his global impact and enormous talent and creativity.”

Jan Böhmermann is already a multi-award winner having received the Grimme-Preis (2014, 2016, 2017, 2018), Grimme-Ehrenpreis (2016), Deutscher Fernsehpreis (2009, 2016, 2017) and Goldene Kamera Digital Award (2017).

Trophies will also be given out in the following categories at the 2018 Rose d’Or Awards in Berlin: Comedy, Sitcom, Drama Series, Limited Series & TV Movie, Augmented Reality & Virtual Reality, Reality and Factual, Arts, Game Shows, Entertainment and Children & Youth Programmes.

Joanna Lumley will also be awarded the Rose d’Or Lifetime Achievement Award for her enormous contribution to the world of entertainment in a career spanning over 50 years.
